I’ll be “brief”…

Mixtress Kit 600Have you found your perfect scent?

I consider myself a student of perfumery. I never imagined it when I was younger, but as I followed my gut and my heart, I realized that my entire existence has been leading me here. I worked in retail, coffee houses, restaurants, selling coffee & tea and catering. Ever since I could remember, I have been sniffing random objects, hoping for an inspiration.

My first perfume oil was Rain. I was twelve. It was perfect.

As my life evolved, and after collecting many jobs and experiences, my intuition guided me to a life of fragrance. Since 2005, I have been creating and working with oils and components to design my products-based spa line, KleanSpa.

Two years ago, I began delving even further into perfumery. As I have been blending perfumes for our clients, I felt is was necessary to gain as much information and experience as possible. I hopped on the fragrance education train with my acquaintance (and now friend) Sarah Horowitz. We have had 6 classes over the course of two years. Full-day study of the art pf perfumery. It has been magical for me and I hope that my new-found experience can translate to help you find your perfect scent.

One of the things that we learned about was “briefs.” A fragrance brief is something that perfume houses request from their clients to help them get a picture of what they want their potential, imagined scent to be. When scent is described, we use the words of our other senses to describe it. “Sweet,” “sharp,” “airy,” etc…

From the very first class, Sarah had us writing our own briefs. We would base them on the theme of that class. In our last meeting, Sarah turned our class over to fellow perfumer, Jeanne. She is such a lovely person and everything she speaks sounds like poetry. Her focus for this class was the Greek Gods & Goddesses.

Here’s an example of a brief that I wrote based on Jeanne’s teachings of Hermes:

Spring’s Message

Follow me into the grace
I’ll guide your singing souls
With notes of spring & lyre
A fragrant earth awash with light
Young nymph blooming
Blossoms looming
Spring has sprung
I carry the message
I carry the song of earth & air.

This is just an example of what a brief can be. Some people are VERY specific and some use just a few words that describe the feeling of a place or color. In any case, there is no doing it wrong. Since I have been a songwriter (my former life) all my briefs come out as lyrics or poems. I try to tap into my creativity and instinct and just write what comes out.

Picking the notes for this small ditty, was fun. And based on interpretation.

What notes could you see in this scent?

Have you found your perfect scent? Start with writing a brief. And see what happens. This may be a key to unlock what your heart, nose and soul are looking for!

I would love to see how you interpret this brief! Please include your ideas in the comments!

Scentually yours!

Jennifer

Do you Hate Change?

Meditating on Change

So. Do. We… but sometimes it’s necessary

We feel a change in the air over here at KleanSpa and are excited to make space for what’s to come. It’s all around us and time and time again, when we have made space for something new, it always shows up! (And it’s usually better than we had ever imagined).

For the last year or so, I have been on a mission to fine-tune and simplify our product offerings and fragrances. Some scents have been slowly removed  but now it’s time to rip off the bandage!

What I have learned about myself in this process is that I don’t want to make anyone unhappy. Our customers mean the world to us! But in this case, the business needs some streamlining and I have been avoiding making bigger, swifter changes for almost two years.

On November 15th, we will be shortening our fragrance list and size offerings as well as eliminating some of our actual product lines.

Here’s how it will actually work. We will be retiring almost half of our scents for products like LotionBody PolishButterBar Soap & Bath Syrup. We will continue to provide those scents in Perfume OilScent MistsKoolersDiffusers and Treatment Oil. The rest of the “non-retired” scents will remain available in all of our products. (I will list the scents in tomorrow’s blog post).

We will also be removing several products from our offerings as well: Foamers, Salt & Milk Soaks, Shampoo & Conditioner, KleanPaw (our doggie line).

And finally, if that wasn’t enough, we are going to shorten our size offerings. It’s just become too cumbersome to have 3-4 sizes in certain products.

Now, before lack of breath and hyperventilation cause you to pass out, there is a temporary solution until your favorite item is gone forever. You DO still have until NOVEMBER 15th to stock up on said scents & products.

We hope you will celebrate and embrace the change with us as we go through some growing, or in this case, “shrinking” pains.

From now until November 15th, we’d like to offer a 15% off discount to help you with the impending changes.

What Inspires you?

Sushi & Coloring

Lately I have been searching for inspiration. That thing that comes when I get so excited about something I can’t get it out of my mind. It often shows me the next path to take.

Yesterday I mentioned that I had been feeling stuck. Not sure what direction to take. It seems that when I am feeling that way, it’s usually because I’m uninspired.

Earlier this year, I was extremely motivated by coloring. Yes, that thing that 6-year olds do and yes, there’s this thing that’s been happening the last few years in the adult coloring arena and I jumped on that train…full steam ahead!

I purchased every book I could get my hands on and so many variations of colored pencils that my head was spinning with excitement!

I couldn’t. not. color.

Every night, I was in front of my TV with a table and coloring book. It’s like it was calling me to do it and I listened. I am not great at coloring. I am definitely not a fine artist by any stretch of the imagination, but what I learned was that it kept me focused on what was directly in from of me. A Zen, experience, if you will. I learned by sharing my experience that there were others in my circle who were totally entranced by coloring. So I decided to have a coloring party…and it was so much fun to share this with fellow coloring kin.

I struggle with anxiety and while it’s less intrusive than it used to be, this exercise is perfect for me. Calming the the left side (thinking part) of my brain while allowing the right (creative) side to play. The one thing I also noticed by doing this is that it “loosened-up” my artistic energy. I found that it helped me with my business and with some of life’s challenges.

Coloring is definitely a mind/body exercise and contributes to overall well-being and beauty.

What inspires you? What do you do to get the creative juices flowing?

Here are a few links to some of my favorite coloring books:

The Secret Garden by Johanna Basford

India by Abrams Noterie (a French coloring book)

My favorite pencils (thus far): Prismacolor (Soft Core)

Would love to hear about what inspires you!

One More Time…with Feeling!

Where am I going

Today is October 19th, 2015. It’s the start of another Blog Your Brand month-long challenge. I wrote about the last challenge in the summertime, but only lasted one day. I was not able to get my image to load and was disqualified…:-(

THIS time, I am trying again. And with the phrase that my piano teacher used to use, “One More Time, with Feeling.” Let’s see how long I last, one post at a time. The goal is to blog once per day for one month. We are also required to post it on a certain FB group page and tag it on Twitter or Instagram. The minimum amount of words is 300 and we must post an image.

I like that I get to try again. It shows that we all have opportunities in life to start over, any time we like. There is not just one chance to accomplish things. Plus, it’s not necessary to beat ourselves up for not “winning” or completing something. Although there is a sense of satisfaction in just finishing a task or goal, it’s not the entire piece of the puzzle. Sometimes it is just the road we take to get somewhere and not the destination.

In January of 2005, I had no idea how many roads I would travel during my journey as a business owner, much less grow it every day to a place where I could do what I loved for a living and support others as well. But recently I have been thinking about my business…of course I am always thinking about it, but in this case I have felt kind of stuck. Not sure where to take it or what to do with it. I’ve spent time discussing it with friends and business colleagues. I had a brainstorming session with my Mastermind group to see where I (and or KleanSpa) was headed or could head. There are many possibilities and I will share some of those with you during this blogging process.

I hope you will share your thoughts!

See you tomorrow!

The Story of KleanSpa, Part four

It was the month of July, 2009, and I had just moved our company out of its first non-home workspace. The connections I had made through my previous business inspired a partnership that has been a match made in business heaven. My biz acquaintance, Amanda, and I (and her business partner) opened a shop together. She had a dream of having a most awesome gift shop (or as we like to call it–“The best store ever”) where she curated from local artisans and purchased their wares directly from them to support them from the get go.

We found a space in Burbank, CA. I had been looking for my own space, but the rent was more than I could swing at the time. During a last-minute lunch to discuss what we both wanted in a space, I got a call from a realtor in Burbank. There was a space that was available and we jumped at the chance to see it. We met and looked it over….the space was too big for us, however it brought us to the area and we found the perfect location. Two weeks later we signed a lease and on April 1st, 2009, got the keys. On July 25th, we had our soft opening (ignore the potentially nasty term) and the rest is history.

The Story of KleanSpa, part three

When we last left off, we had just fulfilled the order from Border’s. It was an incredible experience and I was so grateful to learn so much in such a short time.

The following July (2008), I rented and shared a space in back of a friend’s bath & body company. I truly needed to move my “Klean” operations out of my apartment into a real space. We were only online at this point and had lots of wholesale business.

Here’s the thing. Do you know how it is to have a roommate that you don’t know? This experience taught me a lot about that. You move in with someone you barely know and have growing pains, except in this situation, they never ended. I got to learn so much about what I didn’t want, how to deal with challenging personalities (and I don’t mean my own) and eventually learning to make a change. After exactly one year, I removed myself from the situation.

My Friends Lost Their Home in a Fire

Yesterday I wrote about how I am human. How I committed to doing a 30-day (in a row) blog challenge and failed. There was a reason my blogs didn’t get done…I jumped in to help my friends by creating a GoFundMe campaign to help us raise money because their home had been destroyed by a fire.

My friends Patty & Sergio lived in a beautiful apartment in Toluca Lake, CA. The building next door had been vacant for 10 years. I am guessing the builder ran out of money and let it sit there. The building was sold and the workers were beginning the demolition. Patty had called the police because, seemingly in an attempt to save wood etc…the workers were using saws to take apart the structure instead of tearing it down. Sparks kept flying onto Patty’s balcony. She was concerned for their safety and the safety of the building. The police did nothing. The next day, they workers were at it again, and that building and Patty & Sergio’s caught fire and their home was destroyed. They lost everything.

I heard about it just after she posted about it on Facebook. Luckily she had grabbed her phone before jumping out a second story window to escape the flames and was able to let us know. Their beloved dog, Winston, did not make it. :-(

Here’s a picture of Patty, Sergio & Winston in happier times:

Patty, Sergio & Winston_cropI was drawn to help them so I started a GoFundMe campaign. I am so grateful for all the support that has come from this. If you feel moved to donate, any amount would help, please click here. So far we have raised (at the time of this writing) $10,640. Thank you for reading this and our thoughts and prayers go out to Patty & Sergio.

scentually yours,

Jennifer
