Last week, I began sending a Monday Mantra to my newsletter list. Mantras are those short phrases that we can say to get us through the day. I don’t see a way to post date this one, so here in Monday Mantra #1.
So. Do. We… but sometimes it’s necessary
We feel a change in the air over here at KleanSpa and are excited to make space for what’s to come. It’s all around us and time and time again, when we have made space for something new, it always shows up! (And it’s usually better than we had ever imagined).
For the last year or so, I have been on a mission to fine-tune and simplify our product offerings and fragrances. Some scents have been slowly removed but now it’s time to rip off the bandage!
What I have learned about myself in this process is that I don’t want to make anyone unhappy. Our customers mean the world to us! But in this case, the business needs some streamlining and I have been avoiding making bigger, swifter changes for almost two years.
On November 15th, we will be shortening our fragrance list and size offerings as well as eliminating some of our actual product lines.
Here’s how it will actually work. We will be retiring almost half of our scents for products like Lotion, Body Polish, Butter, Bar Soap & Bath Syrup. We will continue to provide those scents in Perfume Oil, Scent Mists, Koolers, Diffusers and Treatment Oil. The rest of the “non-retired” scents will remain available in all of our products. (I will list the scents in tomorrow’s blog post).
We will also be removing several products from our offerings as well: Foamers, Salt & Milk Soaks, Shampoo & Conditioner, KleanPaw (our doggie line).
And finally, if that wasn’t enough, we are going to shorten our size offerings. It’s just become too cumbersome to have 3-4 sizes in certain products.
Now, before lack of breath and hyperventilation cause you to pass out, there is a temporary solution until your favorite item is gone forever. You DO still have until NOVEMBER 15th to stock up on said scents & products.
We hope you will celebrate and embrace the change with us as we go through some growing, or in this case, “shrinking” pains.
From now until November 15th, we’d like to offer a 15% off discount to help you with the impending changes.

Lately I have been searching for inspiration. That thing that comes when I get so excited about something I can’t get it out of my mind. It often shows me the next path to take.
Yesterday I mentioned that I had been feeling stuck. Not sure what direction to take. It seems that when I am feeling that way, it’s usually because I’m uninspired.
Earlier this year, I was extremely motivated by coloring. Yes, that thing that 6-year olds do and yes, there’s this thing that’s been happening the last few years in the adult coloring arena and I jumped on that train…full steam ahead!
I purchased every book I could get my hands on and so many variations of colored pencils that my head was spinning with excitement!
I couldn’t. not. color.
Every night, I was in front of my TV with a table and coloring book. It’s like it was calling me to do it and I listened. I am not great at coloring. I am definitely not a fine artist by any stretch of the imagination, but what I learned was that it kept me focused on what was directly in from of me. A Zen, experience, if you will. I learned by sharing my experience that there were others in my circle who were totally entranced by coloring. So I decided to have a coloring party…and it was so much fun to share this with fellow coloring kin.
I struggle with anxiety and while it’s less intrusive than it used to be, this exercise is perfect for me. Calming the the left side (thinking part) of my brain while allowing the right (creative) side to play. The one thing I also noticed by doing this is that it “loosened-up” my artistic energy. I found that it helped me with my business and with some of life’s challenges.
Coloring is definitely a mind/body exercise and contributes to overall well-being and beauty.
What inspires you? What do you do to get the creative juices flowing?
Here are a few links to some of my favorite coloring books:
The Secret Garden by Johanna Basford
India by Abrams Noterie (a French coloring book)
My favorite pencils (thus far): Prismacolor (Soft Core)
Would love to hear about what inspires you!
Today is October 19th, 2015. It’s the start of another Blog Your Brand month-long challenge. I wrote about the last challenge in the summertime, but only lasted one day. I was not able to get my image to load and was disqualified…:-(
THIS time, I am trying again. And with the phrase that my piano teacher used to use, “One More Time, with Feeling.” Let’s see how long I last, one post at a time. The goal is to blog once per day for one month. We are also required to post it on a certain FB group page and tag it on Twitter or Instagram. The minimum amount of words is 300 and we must post an image.
I like that I get to try again. It shows that we all have opportunities in life to start over, any time we like. There is not just one chance to accomplish things. Plus, it’s not necessary to beat ourselves up for not “winning” or completing something. Although there is a sense of satisfaction in just finishing a task or goal, it’s not the entire piece of the puzzle. Sometimes it is just the road we take to get somewhere and not the destination.
In January of 2005, I had no idea how many roads I would travel during my journey as a business owner, much less grow it every day to a place where I could do what I loved for a living and support others as well. But recently I have been thinking about my business…of course I am always thinking about it, but in this case I have felt kind of stuck. Not sure where to take it or what to do with it. I’ve spent time discussing it with friends and business colleagues. I had a brainstorming session with my Mastermind group to see where I (and or KleanSpa) was headed or could head. There are many possibilities and I will share some of those with you during this blogging process.
I hope you will share your thoughts!
See you tomorrow!
When we last left off, we had just fulfilled the order from Border’s. It was an incredible experience and I was so grateful to learn so much in such a short time.
The following July (2008), I rented and shared a space in back of a friend’s bath & body company. I truly needed to move my “Klean” operations out of my apartment into a real space. We were only online at this point and had lots of wholesale business.
Here’s the thing. Do you know how it is to have a roommate that you don’t know? This experience taught me a lot about that. You move in with someone you barely know and have growing pains, except in this situation, they never ended. I got to learn so much about what I didn’t want, how to deal with challenging personalities (and I don’t mean my own) and eventually learning to make a change. After exactly one year, I removed myself from the situation.
This is Part Two of a five part article about how KleanSpa got started!
We left off here…
And then I got the email…it was from a buyer at Border’s (remember Border’s Books & Music?). He was searching for bath & body companies to add to their stores to try out more gift-y items. He asked that I send samples, which I did.
How could this be possible for such a large company to find me? I mean, I was operating my business by myself out of my apartment. Well, remember that blogging campaign? That’s how! He found a review of us on a blog!
I heard back a few weeks later and he told me that he was getting ready to go to London but that I would see an order in my inbox within a week. What!? Holy Cowbells Batman!
Luckily, I can sometimes be a smart cookie. While I was waiting to hear back, I had coordinated a fulfillment company, called all my vendors and had a $40,000 Line of Credit lined-up in case I needed an order filled. How did I know to do this? Sheer luck. I asked him what the order might look like and he sent it to me….You might want to sit down for this. A $60,732 order! In fact, I am going to post a shot of it here….they are no longer a company so I don’t think it breaks any rules!
A week later, it came. I hired an assistant, rounded-up every component, bottle and jar and sent it to the fulfillment company. It’s was the most stressful 5 weeks of my life. I was on a fast-track to business and fulfillment. Problems came up and I spent a few sleepless night problem-solving. The outcome? It was filled and shipped on-time!
Time for a drink. 🙂 See you tomorrow, with our next chapter!
I want to tell you the story of KleanSpa which begins in a small apartment in North Hollywood, CA.
A long, long time ago, I had the idea that I would start a bath and body company. I truly wanted to have a business where I could create something that customers would want again and again. That’s not the entire reason, but I wouldn’t know my true calling for many years.
At first it was just a thought that floated in and out of my brain for about 6 months. I looked to other’s in the indie beauty world for inspiration. I had never made a natural/DIY bath and body product in my life. But that didn’t seem to hinder me from considering this venture. Then, one day, at the end of December 2004, the name hit me! KLEAN! I know. Anyone could have thought of that name. Of course I was a huge fan of the “kustom kar kulture”, and had a handmade purse and jewelry business named Klutchez for several years…so KLEAN wasn’t a far cry.
That was it. All I needed to push me into obsession mode.

It all fell into place. Ideas were popping up left and right and I was moving a mile a minute. Then, buy July 2005, I had my first website. Phew. That was done. But I wanted more and more and kept moving. If you build it they will come, right? Nope. Not so right.
Luckily, I had so much drive and passion towards the business, nothing was impossible if I did it one thing at a time.
I booked events, hired a PR company to do a blogging campaign, kept fine-tuning the products, filed logo for a trademark, joined several women’s business groups, got insurance…there was never not something to do. And I did it all from the inside of my 1-bedroom apartment.
And then I got the email…which I’ll tell you about tomorrow! 🙂
Do you love your neighbor?
We want to help you start! Here’s how!
Last night (at four in the morning) when I was in between sleeping and waking, I thought of an idea. I don’t always have ideas like this and I am usually not awake at 4am!
But this one felt really good! Here’s the story…
Recently, I have been helping my dad who is 84. He has fallen quite a bit over the last few years, and no longer drives. I have jumped-in to help him out in any way I can. One of the things he wanted me to do was bring KleanSpa products to his house so that I could give them as a gift to his new neighbors. They have lived in the house at least 6-months and he really wanted to welcome them to the neighborhood. I kept forgetting to bring the items and he kept reminding me. (There’s a lot to remember when you run a business and take care of an aging parent.) Anyway, I finally brought one of our diffusers and walked it over to their house and knocked. The gal who lives there opened the door and was so thrilled to receive an unexpected gift. She asked me to come in and told me that they were home most of the time (as they worked from home) and that if my dad needed anything, that he could call. She then gave me her contact info.
This act of kindness not only made her feel good, it made me feel great! I am not sure about you, but I have neighbors that I have had for over 10 years. I am friendly with many of them and occasionally we have given gifts to each other. Completely randomly and for fun and for free…meaning with no expectation of something in return. But I want to feel that sense of community again.
Here comes my idea! I want to offer this to you. This weekend, starting today, since it is a long weekend for many of you, I am giving you the opportunity to “love your neighbor.” I encourage you to spread the good will and the KleanSpa love to others near you. When you purchase a small lotion or polish, you will receive an identical item to pass along to your neighbor. On OUR dime! (Limit 2 items to give). AND, after you take part in this, we will credit you 12 points (worth $10.00) to your KleanSpa Punchcard. That means, the next time your order, you will save $10.00 on your order! (This will be added by hand, after you place your order. Not to mention you will receive the points you gain just by placing the order).
Right now, you may be saying, why would I want to love my neighbor? They leave their trash cans out all week or they let their dog do its business on my lawn and don’t take care of it! Or, I live in a tiny town and my closest neighbor is a half-mile away. I get it. If you simply can’t bare the thought of talking to your neighbor, pick someone you think needs a little love (maybe that guy who flicks his cigarette butts on the street needs some manSCRUB). A little good energy is what we want to spread. It’s a win-win for everyone.
So what do you think? It’s Easter weekend and whether you follow that path or not, it’s Spring. Time to celebrate something new and spread joy!

Hello KleanSpa followers (if there are still some of you out there)!
It’s been over a year since my last post. I can believe it! I guess you can see that blogging wasn’t on the top of my list.
Valentine’s Day seems like a great day to start blogging!
We had an incredible 2010. Besides our collaboration with MiniLuxe in the Boston area, we joined forces again with our co-operator, MINDFULnest, and opened a second location in Santa Monica, CA. Last year also marks the year we started using the name KleanSpa (formerly: KLEAN Bath & Body). With new labels and a new name, we are unstoppable. We hired Jason Van Fleet of Van Fleet Photography, to make our products look clean (pun intended) and fresh!
This year we are releasing a few new products: Shampoo and Conditioner. You will be able to order your favorite KleanSpa fragrance and use it to wash those lovely locks.
I feel a little out-of-practice in blogging today, but my intention for this year is to blog. No matter how long or short. I love our customers and will enjoy staying connected here!
Until next time, thanks for reading!

P.S. Happy Valentine’s Day!
